About Codility
Codility is a skills assessment platform that shows which people can do the work. Companies use Codility in four ways: to hire software engineers, to hire for business roles such as sales, finance and operations, to assess the engineers they already employ, and to assess how well their other current employees use AI. Greg Jakacki founded Codility in 2009, and Codility has run tens of millions of assessments since then. All four uses run on the same validated tasks and scoring rules, and a person reviews every result.
Technical hiringCodility assesses software engineering candidates with Screen, an assessment candidates take on their own time, built on real-world engineering tasks. Codility also runs Interview, a structured live interview in VS Code, where candidates can use AI tools such as Claude Code when the hiring team allows it.
Business hiringCodility assesses candidates for business roles, such as sales, customer support, marketing and finance, on a piece of work they complete with an AI assistant, and scores the work they produce. Hiring teams then interview the strongest candidates in Interview.
Technical workforceSkills Intelligence assesses the engineers a company already employs, with the same tasks and scoring Codility uses for hiring. Engineering leaders use the results to plan upskilling, staffing and internal moves.
Business workforceCodility assesses how well current employees in business roles, such as sales and finance, use AI in their work. HR and learning teams use the results to see where each team stands.
AI for Business is the name Codility uses for assessing AI skills in business roles, for both candidates and current employees. AI for Business runs on the same platform as Codility’s engineering assessments.

01 · Screen and Interview
Technical hiring: hiring software engineers
Codility helps companies decide which software engineering candidates to hire, using evidence from real-world engineering tasks. Screen gives every candidate the same assessment early in the process. Interview runs structured live interviews in a shared VS Code environment. Hiring teams can switch the AI Assistant, AI Copilot and Claude Code on or off for each task in Screen and for each interview in Interview, and Codility saves every AI interaction for the reviewer.
Technical hiring includes more than 1,300 validated tasks across more than 80 languages and frameworks, covering work simulations, coding, SQL, system design and AI skills. Live interviews include a terminal, sidecar services, a whiteboard, a full transcript and a scoring rubric. Sidecar services are supporting systems, such as a database, that run alongside the candidate’s code. Integrity signals combine into one risk level, and Codility connects with applicant tracking systems (ATS).
02 · Screen and Interview
Business hiring: sales, finance and other non-engineering roles
Codility helps companies decide which candidates for business roles, such as sales and finance, can use AI well in the job. Each candidate completes a piece of work for the role with an AI assistant. Codility scores the work the candidate produces by fixed rules, so the same work always gets the same score. Hiring teams then interview the strongest candidates in Interview.
Business hiring includes more than 50 validated business tasks, each taking 20 to 60 minutes. The library holds general AI tasks any candidate can take, and tasks built for specific roles, including customer support, customer success, sales, product management, marketing, data analysis and finance. Business hiring uses the same reports, ATS integrations and compliance as engineering hiring.
03 · Skills Intelligence
Technical workforce: assessing current engineers
Codility shows engineering leaders the skills of the engineers they already employ. Skills Intelligence assesses current employees with the same tasks and scoring Codility uses for hiring, so new hires and current teams are measured the same way. Leaders use Skills Intelligence to staff projects, aim training at real skill gaps, plan for AI adoption and match people to internal moves.
Skills Intelligence assessments are built on the Engineering Skills Model, which covers 30 skills and 180 subskills across 5 categories. Each skill is rated on a 5-level proficiency scale. Scoring checks maintainability as well as correctness, with more than 25 maintainability measures, and leaders see skill gaps by team.
04 · Skills Intelligence
Business workforce: assessing current employees in business roles
Codility helps HR and learning teams see which employees in business roles use AI well in their work. Employees complete the same kind of task as candidates, with an AI assistant, and Codility scores the work they produce. Business hiring uses the same tasks, so new hires and current teams are measured the same way.
The business workforce assessment uses the business task library. Codility gives each team and function a baseline of AI skills, and the results show where training will help most.

How Codility measures skills
All four uses run on the same validated method.
Tony Mellek, PhD, an industrial-organizational psychologist, leads Codility’s assessment science team as Head of Assessment Science. The team includes award-winning assessment scientist James Meaden.
Assessment engineers design every task, and occupational psychologists review it. The team also tests each task to check whether AI alone can solve it.
Codility’s Technical Manual is written to the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Codility updates the manual every 6 months and shares it with prospective and current customers.
Codility checks adverse impact at every measured cut score, against the EEOC four-fifths threshold. An adverse impact check tests whether any group of candidates passes at a lower rate than others, and a cut score is the score a candidate needs to advance.
Scoring follows fixed rules, so the same work always gets the same score.
For engineers, Codility uses the Engineering Skills Model, which draws on more than 30 international competency frameworks and was validated by engineering leaders.
For business roles, experts write the scoring rules for each task, and Codility saves every AI prompt and response for the reviewer.
Integrity, AI use and compliance
Integrity and AI use
Integrity signals are the evidence a reviewer uses to judge whether an assessment was completed fairly. Codility’s signals include identity verification, proctoring, a similarity check across submissions, Pattern Detection for solutions retyped from another screen, and Cheating apps detection through the Codility Desktop App.
Codility combines the signals into one Integrity Risk level: None, Low, Moderate or High. A person reviews the evidence and makes the decision.
Codility removes tasks that leak online from its library, on every plan.
Codility does not train AI models on candidate or employee data.
The same integrity controls apply to engineering and business roles.
Integrity RiskNoneLowModerateHigh
Compliance and data

Hiring software engineers
Does Codility let you run technical interviews in a real IDE?
Yes. Codility Interview runs in VS Code with a terminal, sidecar services, a whiteboard and a full transcript. Interviewers see a candidate build, run and debug code in the way the candidate would on the job. When the hiring team allows it, the candidate can use AI Copilot or Claude Code, and Codility saves every AI interaction for the reviewer.
How does Codility help prevent cheating on coding assessments?
Codility collects integrity signals, which are the evidence a reviewer uses to judge whether an assessment was completed fairly. The signals include identity verification, proctoring, a similarity check across submissions, Pattern Detection and Cheating apps detection. Codility combines the signals into one Integrity Risk level, and a person reviews the evidence and makes the decision. Codility also removes tasks that leak online from its library.
Can Codility handle large-scale technical screening for enterprise hiring?
Yes. Codility has run tens of millions of assessments, and enterprises use Screen to give every candidate in every role and country the same assessment. The Custom plan adds unlimited users with role-based access, SSO, ATS integrations and validation and fairness analysis.
Should I use a take-home assessment or a live interview, and does Codility support both?
Codility supports both, and each one measures something different. Screen gives every candidate the same task and a comparable score, which suits early stages and high volume. Interview shows how a candidate reasons, collaborates and debugs, which suits final rounds. A common approach is to use Screen to shortlist candidates and Interview for finalists, and Interview also runs on its own.
How does Codility assess AI coding and prompting skills?
Codility assesses these skills with AI-native tasks in a real VS Code environment. In “Work with AI” tasks, the AI assistant acts as the candidate’s co-worker, and several tasks are designed so that the most common AI suggestions are wrong. A candidate who accepts the assistant’s first answer loses points. “Build AI” tasks assess candidates who build AI and machine learning systems.
Can Codility assess debugging and the ability to check AI output?
Yes. Codility’s AI-native tasks measure skills including checking AI output, evaluating AI and critical thinking, alongside code quality and problem-solving. Some tasks are scored on the quality of the candidate’s process as well as on the final answer.
Does Codility score code quality and maintainability as well as correctness?
Yes. Codility’s scoring checks correctness, and Skills Intelligence scoring also checks maintainability, with more than 25 maintainability measures, including code structure, naming and modularity. Reviewers can replay how a candidate built a solution, step by step.
How does Codility compare with HackerRank and CodeSignal?
HackerRank offers a library of more than 7,500 questions, according to HackerRank, and CodeSignal offers a vendor-led service with pre-built assessments. Codility shares its full validation evidence with prospects, including the Technical Manual, and checks adverse impact at the customer’s own cut scores. Codility also uses the same validated tasks for hiring and for current employees. The full comparisons are at codility.com/compare/.
Hiring for business roles
Can Codility assess candidates for business roles such as sales, marketing and finance?
Yes. Codility assesses candidates for business roles including sales, marketing, finance, customer support, customer success, product management and data analysis. Each candidate completes a piece of work for the role with an AI assistant, and Codility scores the work they produce by fixed rules. Business hiring uses the same reports, ATS integrations and compliance as engineering hiring.
How does Codility assess AI skills in candidates for business roles?
Codility gives each candidate a realistic task from the role and an AI assistant to complete it with. Experts write the scoring rules for each task, so the same work always gets the same score. Codility saves every AI prompt and response, so the reviewer can see how the candidate used AI. Each task takes 20 to 60 minutes.
Can candidates for business roles be interviewed in Codility as well as screened?
Yes. Hiring teams screen candidates for business roles in Screen and then interview the strongest candidates in Interview. Both steps use the same platform, reports and integrations as engineering hiring.
Assessing current employees
How do I build a skills intelligence view of an engineering organization?
A skills intelligence view starts from a skills model, assesses real tasks instead of self-reports, and rolls the results up by team and role. Codility Skills Intelligence follows this approach. Engineers complete tasks mapped to the Engineering Skills Model of 30 skills and 180 subskills, and leaders see each person’s proficiency, skill gaps by team and fit for each role.
Can Codility assess current employees as well as candidates?
Yes. Skills Intelligence assesses the engineers and business teams a company already employs, with the same tasks and scoring Codility uses for hiring. New hires and current teams are measured the same way, so leaders can compare them directly.
How can a company measure the AI skills of its current employees?
A company can measure AI skills by asking employees to complete real work with AI and scoring the result. Codility gives employees in business roles, such as sales and finance, the same kind of task candidates complete, with an AI assistant. Codility then shows a baseline of AI skills by team and function, so HR and learning teams can see where training will help most.
Method, AI and compliance
What predicts on-the-job success better than resumes?
Structured interviews and work sample tests predict job performance far better than years of experience, a core resume signal. A 2022 meta-analysis in the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Applied Psychology estimates the validity of structured interviews at .42 and of work sample tests at .33. The same study puts years of job experience at .07. Source: Sackett, Zhang, Berry and Lievens, 2022.
Can candidates use AI during a Codility assessment?
Yes, when the hiring team allows it. Hiring teams switch the AI Assistant on or off for each task in Screen and Skills Intelligence and for each interview in Interview. Candidates can also use AI Copilot and Claude Code in the VS Code environment. Codility saves every AI interaction, so the reviewer can see the candidate’s prompts, the AI’s suggestions and the changes the candidate accepted.
Does Codility use AI to make hiring decisions?
No. No AI or machine learning makes hiring decisions at Codility. Scoring follows fixed rules, so the same work always gets the same score, and a person is accountable for every decision.
Is Codility SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliant?
Yes. Codility is SOC 2 Type II audited, with the report available under a nondisclosure agreement, and ISO 27001 certified. Codility is also GDPR and CCPA compliant, and customers choose EU or US hosting on AWS.
Is Codility compliant with the EU AI Act and New York City Local Law 144?
Codility is designed to support compliance with New York City Local Law 144, and adverse impact analysis is available through Professional Services. No AI or machine learning makes hiring decisions at Codility.
