The 6 best AI skills assessment tools for non-technical roles in 2026
Scored on published criteria: what the candidate does with AI, how the score is produced, integrity, coverage and price.
Codility scored highest on our published criteria for hiring into business roles and measuring current teams, where the decision has to hold up to a candidate, a regulator or a client. CodeSignal ranks second, and the difference between the two is how the score is produced and how much of the AI activity the reviewer can see. Workera, Canditech, iMocha and TestGorilla complete the list, in that order.
AI tools are now part of the job in business roles, including sales, marketing, finance and operations. When leadership asks for every hire to work well with AI, talent, HR and learning teams have to measure it, for new hires and for current employees. A résumé line or a self-rating does not show whether a person can produce good work with an AI tool, so you need a way to test it directly. The tools built to test AI skills work in different ways, and the differences decide whether the result can support a hiring decision.
Between September 9 and October 9, 2026, we read product, pricing, help-center and trust pages for the 12 vendors named in this article. We rechecked every competitor claim on October 19, 2026, and read review ratings on Capterra and G2.
The article covers:
- A ranked shortlist of 6 AI skills assessment tools, with the full scoring sheet behind it
- A side-by-side view of how the candidate uses AI in each tool, and how the score is produced
- Pricing models, five questions to ask each vendor and a decision table you can fill in
Key takeaways
- The test format decides whether you see real AI work. The six tools use three formats: scenario questions, an AI-led interview or conversation, and a task done with an embedded AI tool. Only a task done with an AI tool shows whether someone can produce work with it.
- Ask whether AI produces the score, and where a person reviews it before a decision. Legal teams ask both questions before a score informs a hiring decision. TestGorilla documents AI-scored interviews that recruiters can override. Canditech scores open answers with AI scoring agents. CodeSignal uses AI to grade responses against rubrics. Codility scores the deliverable deterministically against an expert-defined answer space, so the same deliverable gets the same score every time, and no generative AI grades the work.
- When AI is allowed, integrity comes from a reviewable record of how the candidate used it. Codility saves the full AI Assistant conversation to the candidate record on every result, next to identity verification and proctoring. Canditech shows recruiters how candidates used ChatGPT and search. CodeSignal logs prompts and responses and makes the logs available to customers on request.
- Check which plan includes the business-role AI assessments. CodeSignal puts its finance and operations assessments on the quote-only Pro plan, and Canditech puts its AI skills evaluation on its Enterprise plan. Codility lists its Business task library on its Custom plan. TestGorilla puts job simulations and its full AI interview library on its Plus plan.
- Match the tool to the decision the score has to support. For hiring into business roles and measuring current teams, where the decision has to hold up to a candidate, a regulator or a client, Codility scored highest on our published criteria. CodeSignal fits one vendor across business and technical roles, Workera fits workforce programs tied to learning paths, and TestGorilla fits teams that need a free plan.

What does the candidate do with AI during the test?
An AI skills assessment observes a person using AI to do work, or asks the person about using it. The six tools on this list use three formats. A fourth format, the self-report questionnaire, asks people to rate their own AI skills. SHL’s approach to AI skills is one example.
A scenario question shows how a person reasons about AI. A task done with an AI tool shows whether the person can direct the tool, check its output and deliver a finished piece of work. The task format is closer to the job.
How did we choose and score these tools?
We scored each tool on eight weighted criteria, using only each vendor’s public documentation.
Inclusion and exclusion rules
We included a tool when the vendor’s own public pages show three things: the vendor sells a ready-made assessment of AI skills for non-technical roles, the format of the assessment is documented, and the assessment can be used for hiring or for current employees.
We excluded AI assessments built only for technical AI roles, learning platforms whose tests place people into courses or certify course completion, and tools with no public documentation of the test format.
Other tools we evaluated include:
- SHL: its approach to AI skills is measured through SHL’s Global Skills Assessment, a questionnaire of about 15 minutes in which people compare short behavioral statements, so the person does not use an AI tool during the assessment.
- HackerRank: its AI evaluation grades how engineering candidates work with AI in coding tasks. We found no AI skills assessment for non-technical roles.
- HackerEarth: its AI assessment page names AI engineers, ML engineers and data scientists only.
- Spotted Zebra: an AI interview agent for non-technical roles that assesses behavioral and cognitive fit. We found no AI skills assessment.
- Vervoe: work-sample testing across roles, with published help-center rules for candidate AI use. We found no dedicated AI skills assessment.
- DataCamp: a learning platform with AI certifications, excluded as a learning platform. DataCamp retired its Jobs product on June 23, 2025.
Scoring criteria
Each criterion is rated Strong, Partial, Limited or Not documented. Strong scores 3 points, Partial 2, Limited 1 and Not documented 0, so the weighted score is out of 315.
Integrity signals are the evidence a reviewer uses to confirm that the person who took the test did the work: identity checks, proctoring and the record of the AI activity.
We set the weights before rating any tool, based on the points a talent or assessment leader has to defend when an AI skills result drives a hiring decision. We added the compliance criterion on review at 5%, the weight our coding interview platform comparison gives its enterprise criterion. No other weight changed, so the weights add up to 105%. When two tools tie, integrity signals decide the order. Codility ranks first on the weights above and under three other weightings: equal weights, compliance at 10% and a weighting built for hiring. Under a weighting built for workforce programs, Codility and CodeSignal tie at 285, and integrity signals put Codility first.
Three ratings separate Codility and CodeSignal:
- Integrity, Codility Strong, CodeSignal Partial. Codility documents identity verification, proctoring, behavioral monitoring and the full AI Assistant conversation on every result. CodeSignal documents AI proctoring and ID verification on every Hire plan, and its trust center says AI prompts and responses are logged and that customers can request the logs. CodeSignal does not document a reviewer view of that record on each result.
- Defensibility, Codility Strong, CodeSignal Partial. Codility documents deterministic scoring with no generative AI in the grading. CodeSignal documents AI grading against rubrics and states validation by industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists and annual independent bias audits. We found no published audit report or validation study.
- Compliance, Codility Strong, CodeSignal Partial. Codility documents all four facts. CodeSignal documents SOC 2 Type II and an EU AI Act alignment statement, hosts data in US AWS regions only and lists no ISO 27001 certification.

Use this table for a two-minute comparison. Each entry below restates the price and the fit in full.
The 6 best AI skills assessment tools for non-technical roles
Every entry uses the same fields: overview, best for, key features, how the candidate uses AI, pros, cons, pricing and user reviews.
1.Codility
AI for Business is Codility’s assessment of AI skills in business roles. AI for Business runs on the same platform as Screen and Skills Intelligence, so it draws on almost two decades of assessment science and the same compliance posture: SOC 2 Type II audited, ISO 27001 and data hosting in the US or the EU. Teams that already use Codility for engineering hiring add AI for Business on the same platform.
In an AI for Business task, the candidate produces a deliverable with the AI Assistant. Codility scores that deliverable deterministically against an expert-defined answer space, with no generative AI in the grading. The reviewer gets the full AI Assistant conversation, saved to the candidate record as reviewable AI activity, next to identity verification and proctoring.
Best for
Hiring into business roles and measuring current teams, where the decision has to hold up to a candidate, a regulator or a client.
Key features
- Tasks for business functions including customer support, customer success, sales, product management, product marketing, marketing, data analysis and finance, plus general workforce tasks that apply across job families
- Screen for hiring and Skills Intelligence for measuring current teams, with the same tasks in both
- Identity verification, proctoring and behavioral monitoring on every result
- No AI or machine learning makes automated hiring decisions, and the hiring decision stays with a person on your team
- ATS and HRIS integrations including Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday and SAP on the Custom plan
- A published EU AI Act hiring checklist
How the candidate uses AI
The candidate works with the AI Assistant on one screen, next to the task brief and a solution editor, and submits a finished deliverable. Tasks run about 20 to 60 minutes, and an assessment can combine several tasks.
Pros
- The reviewer can explain how a score was reached, because the score is produced deterministically from the deliverable
- One candidate record holds the deliverable, the AI activity and the integrity signals, for candidates and current employees alike
- An interviewer can read the AI Assistant conversation before the next round and ask the candidate why they used or changed the AI’s output
Cons
- The Business task library is listed on the quote-only Custom plan, and free trials run through Codility’s team instead of a self-serve sign-up.
- The named task library covers eight business functions plus general workforce tasks. CodeSignal, TestGorilla and Canditech publish wider ready-made catalogs.
- Codility offers no self-report or personality instruments.
Pricing
- Starter: $1,200 a year for 120 invites and 1 user.
- Scale: $6,000 a year for 300 invites and 3 users.
- Custom: priced by quote. The Custom plan lists the Engineering and Business task libraries and the enterprise integrations.

How much do AI skills assessment tools cost?
AI skills assessment tools are sold four ways: a free plan, a published self-serve price, a per-participant price or a quote. The plan that includes the business-role AI assessments is often a higher tier than the entry plan, so check that plan’s price when you compare vendors.
The units differ between vendors, so a price per candidate is not comparable across the table.
How do you choose an AI skills assessment tool?
Decide which decision the score supports
A hiring decision needs a score you can explain to a candidate and keep on record. Decide where the AI skills result sits next to any cognitive or situational judgment test you already run, and whether it counts as a weighted factor or a pass mark. A workforce baseline needs results you can repeat after training, so you can show whether the training changed the work people produce. If your main goal is to route people into learning paths, Workera is built for that.
Ask how the candidate uses AI
Ask each vendor to show you the test from the candidate’s side. A scenario question tests judgment about AI, and a task with an embedded AI tool tests whether the person can produce work with it. Ask to see a task at the level of the people you will test, from graduates to experienced staff, because a task that is too hard or too easy for the group tells you little. If you only need a quick read of how people across the workforce rate their own AI skills, a self-report questionnaire such as SHL’s is faster.
Ask how the score is produced and where a person reviews it
Ask whether AI grades the answers, where a person reviews the result before a hiring decision, and where the validation evidence is published. Ask for criterion-related validity, reliability and adverse-impact results for the assessment you will use. Hand the answers to your assessment science or industrial-organizational psychology team if you have one, and to legal.
Ask how much the reviewer sees when AI is allowed
Ask whether the reviewer sees the full AI conversation on each result, or only on request, and whether the record shows when the candidate checked the AI’s output before using it. Ask which identity and proctoring signals sit next to it in the candidate record.
Check the plan that includes business roles
Ask which plan includes the business-role AI assessments, the integrations and ID verification. Ask whether you can pilot with one group, such as interns or one team, before an annual contract. If you already use the vendor for engineering assessments, ask whether that contract can cover business roles. If you need a free plan to start with today, TestGorilla offers one.
The scoring sheet, criterion by criterion
Every criterion, its weight, the question to put to each vendor, and how the top three scored. Use the questions as your own shortlist checklist.
Strong scores 3 points, Partial 2, Limited 1 and Not documented 0. Each weight is multiplied by its rating, so the maximum is three times the sum of the weights.

FAQ
An AI skills assessment is a test that shows how well a person uses AI tools to do the work of their role. The strongest format observes the person producing a deliverable with an AI tool and scores the deliverable. That format shows how the person directs the tool, checks its output and turns it into finished work. Weaker formats ask questions about AI or ask people to rate their own skills. Those formats show knowledge or confidence, and they do not show the quality of the work.
