Codility is our pick for enterprises that need trustworthy information for a hiring decision that has to hold up, in engineering roles and in AI skills for business roles. Another tool fits better in three cases. If you need validated personality and cognitive testing across every role family, look at SHL or HireVue. If you want self-serve screening with a free plan, TestGorilla is the faster start. If you want an AI interviewer to run the first conversation, CodeSignal and HackerRank ship one, and we do not.
Between 9 and 23 September 2026 we read the product documentation, pricing pages, trust pages and public reviews for 9 vendors, then rated each one against six published criteria. Codility publishes this article and ranks first in it, so the method and every rating are on the page for you to check.
What this article covers:
How 8 tools score on validation, AI-era integrity, AI-assisted work, job realism, enterprise fit and role coverage.
What each tool costs at entry level, and how each one counts usage.
Where each tool falls short, Codility included.
Key Takeaways
Validation is the first thing to ask for, and few vendors publish it in full. Codility is the only one of the 8 where we found a full technical manual publicly offered. SHL documents the APA, SIOP and BPS guidelines it builds to, and HireVue publishes an AI Explainability Statement. The others publish a science page, a single study or nothing.
Browser-only proctoring cannot see an overlay app. CodeSignal’s own documentation says its proctoring has no access to applications on the operating system. Codility (Device Integrity Desktop App) and HackerRank (Desktop App mode) work at the operating-system level.
The AI-era question is how a candidate uses AI, not whether they did. Codility, HackerRank and CodeSignal let candidates work with coding agents inside the task and keep a record of the AI activity. Codility applies the same approach to business roles through AI for Business, where candidates work alongside an AI Assistant and no generative AI grades the work.
AI interviewers are now standard in the category, and their scores are rarely validated in public. CodeSignal, HackerRank (Chakra), HackerEarth, TestGorilla and Spotted Zebra ship one. For the two we checked in depth, Chakra and CodeSignal’s AI Interviewer, we found no published validation for the score. Codility does not offer an AI interviewer, by design, as it can’t withstand IO validation.
For enterprises that must defend a technical hiring decision, Codility scored highest on our published criteria. It scored 290 of 300, and it stays first when every criterion is weighted equally.
Which are the best talent assessment tools for enterprise hiring in 2026?
01Codility: Best for enterprises that need trustworthy information for a hiring decision that has to hold up, in engineering roles and in AI skills for business roles
02HackerRank: Best for a large technical question library and the sheer number of ATS connectors
03CodeSignal: Best for AI interviewers across technical and go-to-market roles
04SHL: Best for validated psychometrics (personality, cognitive, situational judgment) at global scale across every role family
05TestGorilla: Best for self-serve multi-role screening with a free plan
06HireVue: Best for structured video interviews and game-based assessments in high-volume enterprise hiring
07HackerEarth: Best for high-volume hackathons without proctoring
08Spotted Zebra: Best for UK enterprise non-technical and early-careers hiring built on skills science
What is a talent assessment tool, and which types matter now?
A talent assessment tool is software that measures a candidate’s or employee’s job-relevant skills, abilities or traits in a standardized way, then reports the result so you can compare people on the same evidence. Most enterprise platforms combine several of the five types below, and the mix matters more in 2026 because AI changes what each type can still measure reliably.
Type
What it measures
Which of the 8 offer it
Skills and work samples
Doing the real tasks of the job in a realistic environment
Codility covers the first type in two forms: work samples for engineering roles, and AI-assisted simulations for business roles through AI for Business.
How did we choose and score these 8 tools?
Inclusion and exclusion rules
The ranked list covers tools whose core product is a scored assessment, sold to enterprise hiring teams, with enough public documentation to rate against all six criteria. Tools built mainly around the live interview are listed separately.
Other tools we evaluated: CoderPad, which is built mainly around the live coding interview.
Scoring criteria
We weighted six criteria by what an enterprise buyer has to defend in 2026. Each tool earns Strong (3), Partial (2), Limited (1) or Not documented (0) per criterion, from a public fact we can cite. The weighted score is out of 300.

Why each non-obvious rating sits where it does:
Codility, coverage = Partial but strongest. Codility assesses engineering roles, and AI skills in business roles through AI for Business. It stays Partial because Codility has no personality or cognitive instruments, and public G2 reviewers describe its front-end library as thinner.
HackerRank, validation = Partial. HackerRank has an I-O psychology team and a fairness report. We found no public technical manual, and its 93% plagiarism accuracy claim has no published method.
CodeSignal, integrity = Partial. Its identity checks are strong (government ID, face match, human review), but proctoring runs in the browser only, and its own knowledge base says proctoring cannot see applications on the operating system.
SHL, integrity = Limited. Remote proctoring covers “many, but not all” products and excludes personality assessments. SHL’s validation pedigree rates Strong, and the ranking reflects that.
HireVue, integrity = Limited. HireVue publishes an AI Explainability Statement and third-party audits, which earn a Strong on validation. We found no public documentation of controls for hidden AI apps or AI-assisted answers.
Spotted Zebra, integrity = Not documented. No integrity controls for assessment delivery are published.
Sensitivity check. With equal weights (each criterion at one sixth), the order is Codility 17, HackerRank 16, CodeSignal 15, SHL 14, TestGorilla and HireVue 13, HackerEarth 11, Spotted Zebra 9. Codility stays first and the top four keep their order, so the weights do not manufacture the #1.
Transparency and limitations
Codility publishes this article and is ranked #1. Here is how to check our work: every rating rests on a public document in our research log, the weights are in the table above, and the equal-weight check shows how much they carry. The ratings are our judgment of public documentation as of 23 September 2026. We did not run hands-on trials of competitor products. Pricing and review ratings change often, and we re-check them at every refresh.

Two tools, Codility and HackerRank, detect at the operating-system level. Only Codility and CodeSignal roll their signals into one rating a reviewer can open, and Codility’s is the only one that is deterministic, with no AI in the rating itself.
How much do talent assessment tools cost?
Enterprise pricing is quote-only at all 8 tools. The entry tiers show something more useful: how each vendor counts usage. Codility’s entry plan costs $10 per invite, against $16.58 per attempt at HackerRank and $15.80 per credit at CodeSignal. HackerEarth is cheaper per unit, at $8.25 per invite.

How do you choose the right talent assessment tool?
Work through these five steps in order. Each one ends with the tools that fit if that step is your deciding factor.
01
Ask for the validation evidence first
Request the technical manual, the adverse impact method and the names of the I-O psychologists behind the content. A decision you have to defend needs scores that someone outside the vendor can review.
Decision: If validated psychometrics across every role family is the main need, shortlist SHL or HireVue.
02
Test integrity at the operating-system level
Run your pilot with an overlay app open beside the assessment, and check what the vendor’s report shows. Then ask whether the signals roll into one rating a reviewer can open, and whether AI sits in that rating.
Decision: If your roles are technical and remote, shortlist Codility or HackerRank in Desktop App mode.
03
Decide how candidates should use AI
Choose whether AI is allowed inside the task, and confirm the tool records every interaction and lets an admin switch it off per task. Score the outcome the same way for every candidate.
Decision: If candidates should choose their own coding agent, look at CodeSignal or Codility. For business roles, look at Codility AI for Business or TestGorilla’s AI Fluency assessment.
04
Match the tool to your volume and roles
List the role families you hire for in the next 12 months and the candidate volume for each. Most enterprises need one tool for technical depth and may need another for frontline volume.
Decision: If your volume is frontline and non-technical, shortlist SHL, HireVue or TestGorilla. For hackathons, HackerEarth. For UK early careers, Spotted Zebra.
05
Check enterprise fit before the pilot ends
Confirm SOC 2 or ISO 27001, the hosting region, SSO and a named connector for your ATS, and ask which plan each one sits on. Entry plans often leave these out.
Decision: If EU data residency is a requirement, get the hosting region in writing from every vendor, including us.
FAQ
What is the difference between a talent assessment tool and an ATS?
An applicant tracking system manages the hiring workflow: job posts, applications, stages and offers. A talent assessment tool measures a candidate’s skills or traits and returns a result you can compare. Most enterprises run both and connect them, so invites go out from the ATS and results come back to the candidate record. When you compare assessment vendors, check that your ATS is on their named connector list, and ask which plan the connector sits on.
Can candidates cheat on talent assessments with ChatGPT or hidden AI apps?
Yes, and hidden overlay apps such as Cluely and InterviewCoder make it harder to spot. These apps run outside the browser and are built to stay invisible during screen sharing. Browser-level proctoring, which tracks tabs, paste events and webcam images, cannot see them. Detection at the operating-system level can, which is why Codility and HackerRank offer a desktop app. Task design matters too: when AI use is allowed, encouraged, and recorded, candidates have less reason to hide it.
Should candidates be allowed to use AI during an assessment?
For most roles, yes, because the job now includes it. The useful question is how well a candidate works with AI: what they ask for, what they accept and what they fix. Allow it inside the task, record every interaction, and score the outcome the same way for everyone. Keep the option to switch AI off for tasks where you need to see unassisted reasoning, such as a fundamentals screen.
How do you check whether an assessment vendor’s scores are valid and fair?
Ask for three things in writing: the technical manual, the adverse impact method, and the names and credentials of the I-O psychologists who built the content. A technical manual should describe what the assessment measures, how scores relate to job performance and how reliability was tested. The adverse impact method should say which groups were compared and how often the analysis runs. If a vendor can only offer a marketing page, treat its scores as unverified.
How much does a talent assessment tool cost for an enterprise?
Enterprise pricing is quote-only at all 8 tools we reviewed. Entry plans show the pricing model: Codility charges per invite ($1,200 a year for 120), HackerRank per attempt, CodeSignal per credit and HackerEarth per invite. Enterprise contracts usually scale with candidate volume, users and add-ons such as proctoring, AI features and integrations. Compare the unit each vendor counts, not only the headline price.
Why doesn’t Codility offer an AI interviewer?
Codility keeps AI out of the pass or fail decision. Scoring is deterministic, so the same work gets the same result and a reviewer can trace every point. An AI interviewer that runs the conversation and scores it would put a model inside that decision. If an AI interviewer is central to your process, CodeSignal, HackerRank and HackerEarth offer one. Codility Interview supports live interviews run by your own engineers.
